How to set a custom wallpaper as a background for your Apple Watch watch face
With Apple Watch OS 2 you now have the ability to add a personal photo as the background to a basic Apple Watch Watch Face – an Apple Watch wallpaper, if you will.
As ever with Apple, this new customisation is strictly controlled in order to avoid compromising the user experience.
So you can only add an Apple Watch wallpaper to a single watchface – Photo – which shows just the day, date and time. No complications, whatsoever.
The style of text is also controlled – white with a drop shadow to ensure that it remains readable whatever the background photo.
Setting a custom photo as an Apple Watch wallpaper is a 2-step process: first you have to get it from your iPhone or iCloud photos onto the watch, then select it as the watchface background.
Go to your iPhone or iCloud photo library and find the photo you want to use.
Click on the heart icon to add the image to your Favourites folder. This by default is the folder that automatically syncs with the Apple Watch.
Now wake your Apple Watch and click on the Digital Crown to bring up the Apps viewer. Click on the Photos icon.
Use your finger and Digital Crown to highlight the photo you want.
Then press hard on the screen until the Create Watch Face message appears. Tap the screen and the photo becomes your watch face or wallpaper.
If you want to edit the image so that it fits better on the screen, wake up the watch and press firmly on the screen. A customize button will appear – you can now use the Digital Crown and your finger to zoom and move the image into the optimum position.
Once you’re done, press the screen again to exit the set-up. And enjoy your custom Apple Watch wallpaper…
