For National Vegetarian Week, we bring you 7 tasty vegetable substitutes for your favourite carbs - so good, you'll never want them again.
Although we’re all partial to carbs, they’re not always the best foods for our waistlines.
Luckily, there are lots of carb substitutes in the form of vegetables that are not only healthier for you, but also taste amazing.
From mushroom burger buns to cauliflower rice, here are 7 tasty vegetable substitutes for your favourite carbs.
Portobello Mushroom Burgers
Reduce your refined carb intake by replacing your normal burger bun with Portobello Mushrooms.
With only 22 calories per mushroom, you can enjoy your favourite burger without the usual guilt.
Drizzling the mushrooms in olive oil before sticking them under the grill will make them extra tasty, and before you know it you won’t even miss that bun.
Cauliflower rice is unbelievably tasty and at only 24 calories per 100 grams, it’s so much better for you than high-carb rice which would cost you a whopping 335 calories for the same serving.
It’s light, fluffy and doesn’t leave you with that horrible bloated feeling you get from rice.
Cauliflower rice is also ridiculously easy to make – you simply blitz cauliflower florets in a food processor until it resembles rice and pan-fry for 5 minutes in a little olive oil or even just stick it in the microwave.
Cauliflower Crust Pizza
Pizza can be a sinful meal, with a single slice usually containing over 100 calories.
Thankfully, this is another dish that can easily be made healthier by using cauliflower for the base instead of bread dough.
Although this may sound a bit weird at first, cauliflower base pizza is truly delicious and very light on the stomach.
Even better, it’s 240 calories for half of one of these pizzas so you can finally enjoy pizza with a clear conscience.
Replacing your normal taco shell with lettuce leaves is an easy way to make your favourite Mexican dishes healthy.
Of course, the healthiness of your taco depends on the filling, but a single taco shell is 98 calories whereas 4 lettuce shells will cost you a tiny 15 calories – clearly the better option.
Lettuce leafs work well as taco shells as they are firm, holding the tasty filling in place. These are definitely worth a go.
Courgetti is one of our favourites, and at only 17 calories per 100 grams, you’d be crazy not to give it a go when the same serving of pasta will set you back 131 calories.
Not only does courgetti taste amazing, it is also fun and easy to make with the use of a spiralizer.
Simply cover the courgetti in your favourite pasta sauce and you’ll barely notice the difference; except around your waistline.
Consisting of meat, cheese and pasta, lasagne isn’t exactly the healthiest of dishes, and can often be well over 500 calories per serving.
However, opting for vegetarian lasagne and making it with aubergine in place of pasta sheets is an easy way to make this dish better for you.
This is a simple way to have your favourite comfort food in low-carb form and is also a great way to get kids eating more veg.
Sweet Potato Brownies
Everyone loves a brownie, and thanks to the mighty sweet potato, this once naughty treat has finally been made healthy.
Satisfying and indulgent, sweet potato brownies are so delicious you won’t even realise they’re healthier.
The sweet potato ensures that the brownies are perfectly moist, gooey and definitely satisfy a sweet tooth.
Sweet potato brownies are much healthier than normal brownies which will cost you 466 calories per serving, compared to their 240 per serving.
