Five key things you need to consider before buying an engagement ring
Buying an engagement ring can be incredibly stressful as there’s a lot riding on it. After years of searching, you’ve finally found ‘The One’ and plan to ask for her hand in marriage.
It’s a symbol of your love and your commitment to taking your relationship to the next level. Not to mention she’ll be wearing it all the time while showing it off to her friends and family.
While selecting the perfect engagement ring you’ll definitely be made to run the gauntlet. You’ll come across terms such as ‘Tiffany Setting’ and the ‘Four Cs’ and will most likely have no idea what’s being said.
Never fear, as Shopomo is here to make the process of selecting the perfect engagement ring a little less stressful. Here’s a quick guide on how to pick out a ring so you can pop the question!
Establish your budget
Before you start looking at engagement rings, you’ll first need to establish a budget.
It’s said that you should spend around two months salary on an engagement ring but you can go right ahead and ignore that. You shouldn’t blow all your money on a ring with a huge rock as there’s nothing romantic about getting yourself into debt.
After all, it’s not the amount of money you spend that matters, but rather the thought that goes into purchasing it and what it symbolises.
Establish a budget and buy the nicest ring you can afford.
What does she like?
It’s at this stage of the process where you have to demonstrate some James Bond-esque skills and find out covertly just what style of ring your girlfriend would like.
Make a mental note of what sort of jewellery she’s likes to wear. Does she like gold or silver? What sort of stone does she like? Is she into vintage? Small and understated or big and glitzy? You could also try talking to her friends and family to get ideas for what she’d like.
You could also consider bringing your girlfriend along while engagement ring shopping. While this may not be particularly romantic, you’ll know exactly what she wants and it makes the whole thing a lot less stressful. Something to consider…
Find out what her size is
One way that you can determine your girlfriend’s ring size is to sneakily take a ring she already owns so that a jeweler can figure it out (as long as she doesn’t realise it’s gone missing).
While this is a pretty important part of choosing an engagement ring, it’s not the end of the world if you end up having to get the ring resized.
Know your diamonds
There are many reasons why diamonds are the stone of choice for an engagement ring. Diamonds are the hardest material, don’t lose their polish and are resistant to scratching. This also makes them perfect for every day wear.
While every diamond may look the same, you need to be aware of the ‘Four C’s’ when purchasing an engagement ring: Colour, Clarity, Cut and Carat.
The 4Cs is the universal method for assessing the quality of any diamond, anywhere in the world.
Consider the band
When it comes to the band, you’ve got a variety of metals to choose from.
One popular choice is platinum. It’s extremely durable and pure, making it a great hypoallergenic choice for brides with sensitive skin. There’s also gold, which comes in a variety colors, including white, yellow, rose, and even green.
Beyond platinum and gold, you might also consider palladium (which has a grayer hue than platinum) or even a recycled metal band, which might include a mixture of platinum and gold.
