Exclusive: Netflix vs Amazon vs Sky’s Now TV on the IMDB Top 250 Movies

Netflix vs Amazon Video vs Sky's Now TV - our exclusive research shows which has the most films in the IMDB Top 250? And why is it the movie coverage of all the streaming services is so poor?

It’s official. Movie fans get a poor return from UK subscription streaming services such as Netflix, Amazon Video and Now TV.

Using the Internet Movie Database Top 250 as a barometer of popular films, Shopomo found that even if you subscribed to all 3 streaming networks simultaneously you would still be able to see fewer than half of the films on the IMDB leaderboard.

To be exact, between them Now TV, Netflix and Amazon Video served up 115 films from the IMDB Top 250 – just 46% of the total.

When you compare that to the sheer breadth of catalogue you get when you sign up for the big music services like Spotify or Apple Music, you can’t help but conclude that movie fans are being seriously short-changed.

Classic blockbusters that aren’t on any of the big 3 UK streaming services include Jaws, Pulp Fiction, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Back to the Future, Alien, and Blade Runner.

Now TV is the clear winner of the IMDB test, which reflects the service’s focus on recent blockbusters and popular classics – and its deals with all the major Hollywood studios.

It ‘scored’ 70 out of the top 250 movies, or a 28% strike rate, which was twice as much as the second placed Netflix on 12%. Amazon Video trailed the group with a measly 15 films from the top 250 in its streaming catalogue (6%) – which is ironic as Amazon owns the IMDB. Oops.

The relatively low scores all round underlines just how far any of the three streaming services are from offering a comprehensive film library.

Foreign language, black and white and more intellectual movies on the IMDB top 250 are conspicuous by their absence – which may be understandable given the commercial objectives – but why no place at all for all-time movie classics like Citizen Kane, Seven Samurai and Pan’s Labyrinth?

Of course, it should be emphasised that any survey like this is only a snapshot of the streaming playing field at a particular moment (in this instance, the week commencing June 6, 2016).

Films appear and disappear from the listings with the depressing regularity of whack-a-moles as contracts start and expire, while there seems to be no rhyme or reason behind which films actually appear on which service: so Now TV has Jaws 2 but not the original Jaws, while Amazon has The Dark Knight but not The Dark Knight Rises or Batman Begins.

Movies are not the only content that these streaming services offer, and each of the Big 3 have spent heavily on exclusive, bespoke content to provide a unique selling proposition. But the results how far we are from having the best movies available on demand to stream from any or all of these subscription services.
